Attractive market
The Swedish market for wind and solar power is one of the most attractive on the European market, thanks to start political support to double electricity consumption in combination with good conditions for large-scale projects. But how can a project developer or investor be able to grow in this market where there is fierce competition for the best locations and projects?
Newera Energy has a unique experience in starting new projects and working in transactional processes. At Vattenfall and as a consultant, Erik Grönlund has been responsible for land agreement negotiations and preliminary studies of new wind power projects corresponding to more than 9000 MW. In addition, he has been responsible for expanding Vattenfall's portfolio with projects of 2500 MW through acquisitions or options. Erik has a rare insight and experience into how the profitability of projects throughout their entire lifespan can be optimized.
Olle Hedberg has personally identified and started four major offshore wind power projects with a potential of 10 GW, i.a. Sweden's largest offshore wind power project Eystrasalt Offshore. In addition, he has been project manager for land-based projects and carried out land contract negotiations and preliminary studies for about 20 PBL projects on land in southern Sweden.

Many years of experience
A development project is about developing from an idea all the necessary prerequisites to be able to ensure a realization. The project is led by a project manager who is responsible for meeting schedule, budget and quality. The role of project manager is very broad and even if you have a project team with experts, great insight into the various disciplines is required to reach the goals of the project. Given the major challenges in the permit processes and in ensuring sufficient profitability, project management is absolutely crucial to whether a project reaches its set goals.
Newera Energy since 2007 very solid experience in project management of wind and solar power projects, both as project manager and as responsible manager for the country's largest project developer in offshore and onshore wind power. Erik Grönlund has, among other things, was the project sponsor for Blakliden & Fäbodberget in Västerbotten (84 wind turbines / 353 MW) until the investment decision, when 70% of the projects were divested and a 20-year PPA was signed. Olle Hedberg has, among other things, been responsible manager for Eystrasalt Offshore, Storgrundet and Fyrskeppet from start-up to submission of permit application to the government and court, as well as about 20 land-based projects as project manager.

Purposeful organizational capacity
Times change and so do the demands that the market places on the capacity available in the organization. The requirements picture and thus processes are becoming increasingly complicated and many times it is difficult for critical leading functions to cope with all the activities that need to be managed in order to achieve their goals. At the same time, many organizations are stuck in old thinking and outdated methods/working methods, but may not always see that there are better ways to work with the resources that are actually available.
Newera Energy has experience in building organizations from the ground up and has very good knowledge of what is needed to build a cost-effective capacity. Central is the importance that the capacity you build is actually rooted in the needs of the market and that you build creative capacity into the business. It can also be about establishing new functions or structuring parts of an existing business which, for various reasons, is messy and does not achieve the desired productivity / efficiency.

We have positive experiences
The permit processes for new projects, especially wind power, have never been as complicated and difficult to assess as they are now. Only a fraction of wind power projects currently receive environmental permits. Some of the most common reasons for refusal are municipal veto, the Armed Forces and the impact on wildlife. This at the same time as the requirements for documentation have gradually increased, and thus the costs.
However, there are good examples of how the above issues can be handled and resolved. In recent years, Olle Hedberg has been the most successful manager of Swedish project developers in terms of municipal approval, with four positive announcements and no municipal veto. In these processes, Olle has had a very close and fruitful dialogue with the local communities and with municipal officials and politicians, which has resulted in a local and regional commitment to the projects.
At Vattenfall, Erik Grönlund was responsible as manager and project sponsor for several projects that received environmental permits. Three of these projects received municipal approval during that time, i.a. Bruzaholm in Eksjö municipality with 21 wind turbines and one of the country's highest authorized total heights of 240 m. No project was rejected by a municipality during his time as head of Vattenfall.
Planning and permits
The Swedish power transmission system was mainly built up until the 1980s in connection with the expansion of hydro and nuclear power. During the initial phase of the Swedish wind power expansion, this existing transmission system could be used, thanks to some excess capacity, which meant easy and cheap grid connections. Currently, that excess capacity has been utilized, which means significantly larger and more complicated network investments for new solar and wind power projects. Something that is both more time-consuming and affects profitability to a greater degree.
Newera Energy has a lot of practice and experience in developing strategies for how a grid connection can be ensured and dialogue with the grid companies involved. In some cases, it is advantageous to carry out a certain part of the network reinforcement in-house, for example by applying for a line concession, which both Olle Hedberg and Erik Grönlund have worked with in different roles.
An often forgotten, very important economic parameter is the network tariffs that the network companies in question charge. They differ greatly between the network companies, and the strategy you have regarding the network connection can affect the network tariff to a large extent, and thus profitability.

Developing and building wind power projects requires not only an understanding of wind as an energy source and as a force of nature that affects technical solutions and specifications, but also a comprehensive understanding of the wider technical infrastructure, market and regulatory issues that affect the project's viability, as well as the physical, natural, cultural and socio-economic environment surrounding the project site.
Access to broad expertise is therefore a prerequisite for a successful project. Newera Energy has a strong network of subcontractors, partners and experts that cover all aspects of project development.
